Virulence of Z. tritici spores after 49 days in water is comparable to that of fresh spore suspensions. Blastospores were suspended in sterile MilliQ water and maintained for 49 days as before, or suspended from YPD plates immediately prior to use. Spore suspensions were adjusted to 104, 105 or 106 spores per ml and inoculated onto wheat leaves. Pycnidia were enumerated after 28 days. Values are means of two (for 104) or seven (for 105 and 106) independent experiments, in which at least 15 leaves were analysed, and error bars show SE. Different letters above bars indicate significant differences in ANOVA (P < 0.0001) with Tukey’s simultaneous comparisons. Small crosses show data points from individual experiments
